Although this is one of our newest school links, twinning a popular and successful combined school in the Buckinghamshire village of Chalfont St. Peter with the most central and largest elementary school in Gondar, it is nevertheless showing itself to be an energetic and ambitious one.
The link is being steered in Robertswood School by MaryLou Slupek, a lady who already has important ties with Gondar through her son, Jon, who was one of the very successful GondarGap volunteers to teach in Gondar at the beginning of 2004. Robertswood lies in commuter-land, with many families in Chalfont St. Peter having one or more parents who work in London, returning to the Bucks countryside for their home comforts. MaryLou is very much looking forwards to making secure links with the Hibret School and has already begun fund-raising in a big way.
The Hibret School caters for a large number of pre-secondary pupils in the centre of Gondar. Its buildings date from the years of the Italian occupation before the Second World War and are of sturdy and solid stature. The school's more expendable resources are however in a rather poor state and the Hibret's Director, Ato Lulie, hopes that their new link with the Robertswood children in England might lead to a steady improvement in such things as library books and classroom resources.
