The centrepiece of GondarLink is, in many ways, our GondarGap scheme. This is, as far as we know, a unique part of such a link as ours and enables us to monitor the progress of our link in a real and sensitive way.

Two pairs of pre-university students from Dr. Challoner's are chosen each year to go to teach at the Fasiledes School where they interact with small groups of pupils in lessons we call English Communication Skills. They live in Gondar for three months, sharing in the daily life of Gondar and getting to know the Fasiledes students.

In the time that the GondarGap scheme has been running, the quality of spoken English at the Fasiledes School has undoubtedly improved and there is a real enthusiasm for the language and its young teachers at the school. We hope very much that this special help will aid the Gondar students in getting to university and coping alongside their better resourced compatriots from Addis.

Various generous corporate sponsors have been involved with this part of our link. GlaxoWellcome supplied travelling expenses for our first four pairs of GondarGap students. When this funding ran out, Noble Caledonia stepped into the breach for our fifth pair.

Following a substantial bursary from the English and Foreign School Society that greatly helped with expenses for the next three pairs, it was Noble Caledonia who generously came back to help us with funding for three bursaries followed by a new bursary that was offered by RAN Marketing Ltd. We have now come to the end of these funds and are looking actively for financial support for our next GondarGap students.
