Throughout the GondarLink Traveller's Guide you will find recommendations for accommodation at the various places of interest dealt with. We have tried to focus on basic and cheap options as well as including more comfortable choices where they exist.

Hotels are found in most towns in Ethiopia, but especially in places where there is a growing local tourist industry. In Addis Ababa, there are hotels of the excellent quality, with the newish Sheraton Hotel ranking among the finest hotels in Africa.

Throughout the country there are both government hotels and privately owned establishments where a reasonably comfortable room may be hired. Outside of Addis a room in a government hotel will probably cost no more than US$30, and most come with private showers and bowl toilets. Cleanliness in privately owned hotels, however, is often not a priority and the average place has yet to learn what decent toilet facilities and clean bed linen really mean to a traveller!

And yet the cost is remarkably low in most of these places and, with a little effort and patience, most towns can come up with decent options that often make up for a lack of cleanliness by the warm and smiling welcome that they offer. And you can always take your own sleeping sheet in your backpack!

For those thinking about camping note that, except in South Omo, opportunities for organised camping are very limited. You may be able to camp in the grounds of some government hotels, but this may be more expensive than finding a room. v
