GondarLink's association with Kate Fereday and her Kindu Trust goes back many years, to a time when Chris Grant was carefully trying to perceive the needs of schools and education in Gondar while Kate Fereday was very much trying to give similar help to the needy children and families in the same area.

Chris and Kate soon became friends and realised that their work inevitably intertwined to some extent. GondarLink not only started to help Kate with the sponsorship of some children via the Challoner's - Fasiledes school link, but has also continued to encourage such sponsorship as part of the new school links that have been starting in recent years under the GondarLink umbrella. At the moment, there are a dozen Kindu children sponsored through GondarLink, and we hope that this association will continue for many years.

And so to the work of the Trust itself.

During its first four years the Kindu Trust was able to set up seven homes and one night shelter in five locations in Ethiopia, taking into residential care 80 vulnerable children and employing 43 full and part-time staff to care for them.

An important turning-point for the Trust came when a senior social worker who is an expert in Child Affairs was invited to visit the homes in Gondar and Addis Ababa to make suggestions for improving the way the charity worked in Ethiopia.

He recommended that instead of providing residential care for needy children, they should concentrate on childcare within the community - in other words, close the children's homes and reintegrate the children into society, reuniting them with relatives or placing them in foster homes, with continuing guidance and financial support through the well-established Kindu Trust Child Sponsorship Scheme.

The 'Family Reunion Programme' that undertook this task was remarkably successful and over the past year The Kindu Trust has continued to thrive, helping more children and families than ever before.
