Kate Fereday Eshete founded The Dinkenesh Fund in 2000 because she wanted to help the animals of Ethiopia.

She named the charity after her remarkable donkey, Dinkenesh, who walked over 400 miles across the Ethiopian Highlands with her in 1999. Dinkenesh has several meanings in Amharic: ‘she who is first', 'she who is great', 'she who is beautiful'...

The Dinkenesh Fund finances projects in Ethiopia to help animals in need.

It works with local Ethiopian partners, including private animal clinics and the state veterinary service. In future it will work with Ethiopian animal charities, but very few exist at present.

The Dinkenesh Fund's objectives are to prevent cruelty to and to relieve the suffering of animals in Ethiopia.

The Fund does this by:

     (1) paying for shelter, food and medical treatment for abused, sick and injured animals in need;
     (2) financing projects for animal population control, vaccination and worming;
     (3) promoting education in the compassionate treatment of animals.

In Ethiopia there is currently no effective national society for the prevention of cruelty to animals such as exists in the UK. The government veterinary service has inadequate facilities, staff and drugs due to lack of funds.

Statistics

It is estimated that there are 5.5 million donkeys in Ethiopia.

In 2001 Ethiopia was Africa's largest producer of livestock:

      > 35 million cattle
      > 18.4 million goats
      > 24 million sheep
      > 53 million poultry
