August 2004:

Well here we are then …. 24 hours to go … oops!!

A lot's happened since we last wrote.

At the end of July, Paul left Hadfield Cawkwell Davidson (architects practice) and moved back to Amersham to make the most of the home comforts before our departure. Kate finished work and followed him down two weeks later. We would both like to thank HCD and Community Training Services Ltd and all our work colleagues who have proved to be our avid fans and have given us generous support. An extra big thank you to you, Robert Leckie! Kate found it particularly hard to leave her work as she had built fantastic friendships with all there and had a lot of giggles and fun … oh sorry Steve,… and work! All are going to be missed there and all her trainees.

We've popped down to Bristol to say goodbye to all Kate's family and friends …. and Ziggy and Theo! There was an unprecedented turnout and the support was greatly appreciated. Thank you.

On our return to Amersham, we have finally got some visas! (We did have a few hiccups in the beginning, as some of you may be aware!) We've been energetically running around London - sorting out minor last minute things like anti-malarials. A little advice for all those travellers-to-be - make sure you budget enough money! The bikes have been fine-tuned, including a few bodges here and there! The panniers are packed and we've ridden the fully loaded 60lb monsters on a few test rides to get those leggies moving and ourselves settled! …. and the rest of the body parts prepared!

Finally, the list of jobs that has only been getting longer seems to be dwindling and not too soon.

The date for our arrival in Gondar has been set as Tuesday, 29th March 2005. See you all there!

We would just like to continue our thanks - with thanks to CCC in Sheffield, Amanda at Endura Clothing and Martin at Lyons Equipment Ltd for accommodating our last minute requests! Also to the Ethiopian Embassy for their kind encouragement and endorsement. All our friends who've supported us in Amersham, Sheffield and Bristol, but especially our families without whose support … and patience …. we would have had to give up months ago!

Well we can't hang around any longer - we've still got to dash about doing the odd task (??!) before the big day, tomorrow. Keep checking up for our regular(ish) updates.

Take care and keep smiling!

Kate and Paul x
