June & July 2004: Ok…. Where do we start? Sorry folks for the long silence if you've been wanting to follow our progress. Things have been slightly hectic over the past months! Paul has finally finished his 6 years of university (both Kate and his parents are relieved)…..(and well done on your commendation from Kate!) Unfortunately, Paul decided that working on a diploma in architecture just wasn't hard enough and thought that maybe he'd throw in appendicitis for fun! On top of that, this happened a few days before his final hand-in, leaving Kate to do all his printing and mounting in a desperate 3-day struggle to finish. She'd like to thank all who helped and who remained patient whilst she had her little tantrums! Kate got a special thank you from the head of architecture at the university of Sheffield..she's quite chuffed!! Bless! (Thanks very much baby..love Paul) Kate also has had her fair share of hospital visits recently….having felt left out and seeing all the attention that Paul got! Having developed Bells Palsy a short while ago and then an operation, she is finally on her way to a full recovery! She's has now informed her company and will be leaving on 12th August. Paul is currently working at an architects practice in Sheffield to raise a bit of money for the trip. He'll be leaving at the end of July. Now onto the planning for the trip….. things have been slowly getting better over the past few months. There's the support from our friends and family, especially mums, dads and sisters has been incredible. So THANKS guys. We can't thank you enough. What with those visa applications, emails to the embassies, letter writing, stall running and chasing up on all those other little things that we haven't had time to think about. We'd also like to say thank you to everyone who has supported us in so many different ways recently. We now have our bikes ready, nice lurvely solid steel machines. A big thanks has to go to JE James Cycles in Sheffield, (see sponsors page) for helping us with them and also with the spare kit and just being generally nice blokes! (Thanks Bill, Craig, Chris and Andy especially). Orbit Cycles, in Sheffield have kindly given us a good deal on our pannier racks and Lyon Equipment have donated a full set of Ortlieb panniers each for the trip. Kate is particularly chuffed with her two-toned design! Thanks you guys for the support. We also need to thank Rough Guides, Trailfinders, Lumicycle and Nikwax for their generosity. You can find links to their websites on our sponsors page. Finally, we'd like to thank all those who attended the African Banquet for their generous support of our expedition. With just over a month to go, things are beginning to hot up. Most of our jabs are done (phew!!) and visa application forms are being filled out as we speak. So everything is falling into place at last. As the start date draws near, the more nervous yet excited we become. We'll try and keep you up-to-date with any last minute developments before we leave. We hope to see you all on the 29th August! Take care, Kate and Paul
